When mankind finally consumes itself, can any spark of humanity survive? Layla fights to keep those she loves alive when the zombie apocalypse unfolds, but she soon learns that zombies are not the only problem. Q) What inspired you to write this story?

I got inspired to write as a side-effect of being an English professor. My academic mind was waxing poetic over why zombies were starting to get so popular. I had some theories about what zombies symbolize and that slowly morphed into a creative project. I have always written but nothing so dark. One day, I suddenly got the idea for the character of Layla, and after that, everything just fell into place.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I actually started plotting the book in 2011 but didn’t really set pen to paper (well, finger to keyboard) until 2012. It took me about six weeks to write the first draft. I do a lot of writing in my head, so when I sit down to write, I almost always know what my characters will do and say.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love creating worlds and people. I kind of fall in love with my characters. I find myself sharing their emotional highs and lows. For instance, I just wrote the death of a character in my new series. It took me a week to recover! I like the worlds my imagination explores.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I get book hangover after I finish a novel. I dread the months of editing that come next because I can’t write while I am editing. I don’t have the time and energy to do both, so I have to ride it out and wait to start a new novel. It can be a frustrating time.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Well, because I would want it to be a fun day, I think I would choose JK Rowling. I would love to get inside her mind and see her worlds through her point of view. I know that many writers know a lot more about her characters than they share with their readers. I wonder what JK knows about Pottermore that we don’t!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I think we must have 10,000 ketchup packets in our fridge. God knows how old they are, but I don’t think those things ever expire, do they? On the other hand, we never use them. Why am I keeping them? Am I foreseeing a day when I need ½ tsp of ketchup? When does that day come?

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
“The Harvesting” series has two more novels in the works. “The Shadow Aspect,” the second novel in the series, is almost finished. I also have the first two novels of a Steampunk series completed. If you love Layla, you will love the protagonist of that series!
